Yun-Chang (Gordon) Chao, Photovoltaic Materials Manager, will present key insights on next-generation photovoltaic encapsulation in Paris-Saclay. Special thanks to the Institut Photovoltaïque d’Ile-de-France (IPVF) for having Everlight Chemical contribute once again.

 

Encapsulation Is a System Engineering Challenge

Effective encapsulation requires more than picking a material with high barrier performance. It demands a holistic engineering approach.

At ISOS-17, Gordon will share three core takeaways based on real-world development experience:

  1. No Single “Best” Material: True reliability requires balancing barrier performance, curing conditions, device sensitivity, electrical access, and manufacturability for scale-up.
  2. Preventing Hidden Weak Points: High-barrier materials still fail if curing damages delicate layers or if electrical lead-outs create weak points.
  3. Early Design Integration: Encapsulation must not be a final protective step added at the end. It must be integrated early into device and module design.
